As a current Northern Illinois University student, I have thought about studying abroad since I attended college. My friends and family who was able to study abroad have told me about their study abroad experiences. I have talked to the study abroad office years before I decided on which country I wanted to attend. The idea for me to study abroad has always been on my mind whether that was discussing the options with campus abroad programs, attending study abroad workshops, or hearing about individual experiences.
Four to three months prior I had to choose which program and country that fits with me. I wanted to choose a program that fits within my goals. I decided to go with the SAI Florence, Italy program because of the country's culture and its artwork. As an Art Education major, I wanted to connect my study abroad experiences to increase my knowledge of art and use what I learn to educate future generations. After I decided on my program, it was time to communicate with my faculty advisor in my major, study abroad office, and SAI advisor.
I have learned that communication is key to a successful study abroad planning. Once I had read and signed documents, I had to book an airplane ticket a month in advance. This was after I received the approval from the NIU study abroad office. I was and still am excited to have this experience under my belt. I have been telling everyone in my life about this trip.
As for packing, my plane ticket included one checked luggage and two free carry-on. I was not sure what to pack, but my SAI program was able to provide me with a checklist of what to pack. I am very grateful for the program because they provided google drive folders of housing, health & safety, courses, packing & traveling, and a program checklist for me to prepare for my trip abroad. I will be leaving today for my trip! Very excited!
