Some critical thinking questions.
What does visual culture mean to you? How is visual culture related to society? Why is visual culture a concept of art? Visual culture as a curriculum?
Understanding visual culture is important as an artist. Culture is something everyone sees anywhere we go and it’s important to know what it means. These visual cultures include knowing “multicultural/intercultural, multimodal, interdisciplinary, and technological” as stated in Chapter 1, Elementry Art Education: A Practical approach to Teaching Visual Culture (Freedman & Boughton, p.5). Visual culture is always developing and changing within time. There is no single way to see/understand visual culture. Everyone has their own perspective in culture, but everyone must try to understand how different cultures work. As artist’s we can bring awareness to what visual culture is and why it is important in society.
Artists can create multi-modalities from their own perspective/viewpoints in life. Some artists prefer this method rather than a traditional form. Artist’s should understand what interdisciplinary is and how they can utilize it within their work. Visual technologies is something an effective art teacher should learn before becoming a teacher. Technology is advancing more and more everyday. We utilize this form to allow students to better understand the modern image and artwork created through these programs (Freedman & Boughton, p.7-8). These are some terms art teachers should incorporate in their teaching system as a way to educate future students.
This chapter included how past art education systems worked and how art education should be developed into more effective teaching style. The education system changes over time from student’s copying teachers in class to students developing their own creative ideas and understanding of art. Providing critical thinking within students can help their analytical thinking process in forms of art. Teaching traditional and new techniques to student’s is a great way for student’s to explore their interest and understanding of art (Freedman & Boughton, p.35). Art is very much important in forms of visual culture as they provide means of individual lives, cultural identities, and unique way of thinking.
