In order for an artwork to mean something, the artist connects with the work itself. This could be anything related to their beliefs, past, present, inspiration, etc. I feel that students should create meaning within their work, but sometimes its good to simply make beautiful artwork. Many students take art classes to destress from other academic work. The idea of making art and not having to think too much about it is relaxing. However, students should learn how to create meaning within their work too. This way they are able to connect with their work and also enjoy the process of making art.
In order for students to understand the meaning of the artwork, it requires assistance from art educators who understand visual imagery to go in-depth within the process of discovering. As visual imagery develop over time, some imagery may not be "good" in the eyes of others. Visual imagery have been recycled, reframed, and manipulated through time.
For everyone to create meaning within culture, it must be from their own perspective and experiences. Everyone has their own beliefs and understanding of cultures within their environment. Creating meaning within a student’s culture is important and a great way for students to analyze situations. As teachers, we can help students create meaning and understanding of visual culture. The role of art educator is vital in understanding the process of art.
